What is infertility?
You may be struggling with infertility if you’re unable to get pregnant after 12 months of trying, or six months if you’re 35 or older. Frequent miscarriages or stillbirths may also indicate infertility.
Infertility is common and affects 15% of couples in the United States. However, infertility doesn’t mean you won’t ever get pregnant. With advances in medical care, many couples are able to conceive after undergoing infertility treatments.
What causes infertility in women?
Ovulation problems are the most common cause of infertility in women. Every month your ovaries release a mature egg, which is then pushed down your fallopian tubes in anticipation of fertilization. If you’re not ovulating, you can’t get pregnant.
Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is the most common cause of infertility in women. It affects hormone balance and ovulation. Women with PCOS often struggle with an irregular menstrual cycle and may have eight or fewer periods a year.
Some women also struggle with infertility due to primary ovarian insufficiency (POI), which affects normal functioning of your ovaries.
Though less common, your infertility issues may be caused by blocked fallopian tubes, uterine abnormalities, or fibroids.
What can I expect during an infertility consultation?
You can expect a comprehensive evaluation when you come in to see the experts at Lenox OBGYN for an infertility consultation. The goal of your evaluation is to find the underlying cause of your infertility so you get the most effective treatment.
During your consultation, your OB/GYN reviews your gynecological, medical, surgical, and sexual history and then performs a physical and pelvic exam. The team may order various diagnostic tests to confirm or rule out a suspected cause, such as bloodwork to test ovulation or an ultrasound to evaluate your reproductive organs.
The team also reviews your partner’s sexual and medical history and may request a semen test to assess sperm health.
How is infertility treated?
The team at Lenox OBGYN develops personalized infertility treatment plans based on the underlying cause. Your treatment plan may include medications that increase ovulation, such as:
- Clomiphene citrate
- Human menopausal gonadotropin (hMG)
- Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH)
- Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (Gn-Rh) analog
The team may also suggest intrauterine insemination (IUI) when prescribed these medications to increase your chances of conception. During IUI, your OB/GYN injects specially prepared sperm directly into your uterus during ovulation.
If the underlying cause of your infertility is related to blocked fallopian tubes or fibroids, the team may suggest surgical intervention.
