Labiaplasty
Though considered a cosmetic procedure, many women undergo a labiaplasty to alleviate the discomfort caused by the twisting and tugging of their labia, also called the vaginal lips. The team of board-certified OB/GYNs at Lenox OBGYN specializes in labiaplasty and can talk to you about the procedure and how it may benefit you and your health. To schedule a consultation, contact the office located in the Midtown West area of Manhattan in New York City by phone or online today.
What is a labiaplasty?
Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure to remove excess tissue from your labia minora, which are your inner vaginal lips. The goal of the procedure is to improve symmetry and prevent your labia minora from hanging outside your labia majora, which are the outer hair-bearing vaginal lips.
Labiaplasty is one of the most common cosmetic vaginal procedures performed in the United States.
Am I a good candidate for labiaplasty?
When you come in to see the women’s health experts at Lenox OBGYN, they can help you determine if a labiaplasty is the best choice for you. Though women choose to undergo a labiaplasty for a variety of reasons, it’s most often performed to address the symptoms caused by labia minora that are too long.
Common symptoms include:
- Tugging and twisting
- Pain during intercourse
- Itching
- Irritation
Your long labia minora may also make it difficult for you to wear a bathing suit, ride a bike, or participate in other types of sports.
Though labiaplasty specifically addresses the labia minora, the team may also talk to you about other vaginal cosmetic procedures to improve appearance and reduce symptoms, such as a clitoral hood reduction to reduce excess clitoral tissue or labia majoraplasty to improve the size of your outer vaginal lips.
What happens during labiaplasty?
The team at Lenox OBGYN develops individualized surgical plans specific to your needs and reviews the details during your consultation. What happens during your labiaplasty may differ from another patient.
The team may use local or general anesthesia to perform your labiaplasty. For most women, the team performs a trim procedure in which they remove the excess tissue. For women seeking to maintain their natural border, the team may perform the wedge procedure.
How long does it take to recover from labiaplasty?
Recovery from your labiaplasty may depend on the type of procedure performed. You may experience the most discomfort during the first week.
The team recommends you take that week off from work and use ice packs to treat the pain and swelling. They also discourage sexual intercourse and use of tampons for four to six weeks following your labiaplasty.
Though you should see a significant improvement in appearance within six weeks of your surgery, it may take up to six months for the residual swelling to disappear.
